In the last two weeks, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students learned about the three branches of government. We even simulated a proposed law (a bill) being created in Congress and passed on to the Executive Branch to either be signed into law or vetoed. This was an insightful experience for all. We then looked into the scales of justice and how they are a symbol for the balance that must happen between all of the branches.
The three branches of government and also the Supreme Court are all part of grade level standards taught in Social Studies. In order to further educate your students on these topics, you may want to challenge them to read biographies of Supreme Court Justices. Here is a short list of books: Thurgood Marshall: Civil Rights Attorney and Supreme Court Justice by Mark Rowh Great Justices of the Supreme Court by Nathan Aaseng Ruth Bader Ginsburg: Supreme Court Justice by Linda Bayer-Berenbaum Sandra day O'Conner by Mary Hill Happy Reading! -Mrs. Romberg Mrs. Romberg’s Summer Reading List Suggestions for rising 6th graders:

As a class, we hope to see all the exciting places that Flat Stanley went! The Flat Stanley you see above travelled to California to stay with a student's family. There he went to school, to the hospital, to work with an uncle, and made friends with the family pets. Thankfully, he made it back safely home to Gainesville.
Where has your Flat Stanley gone? I will be happy to show you in class, but if you would like to figure it out at home, check out this video. When watching anything on Youtube, please check with your parents first. You will need to copy and paste this link to your browser (the long white box at the top of the page). This would go great on your cantilevered constructions. :)

It not only was beautiful but we did a lot of neat things too! I took another trip somewhere special with my family, and I can't wait to share it with you! Take a minute to share what you did this summer. :)
Being a short book, I thought that I could squeeze just one more in. Our 3-5th grade unit, Choices, actually incorporates this title into one of the activities. We should be able to finish by the end of the year. It is a book that portrays a boy's struggle with his conscience as his friend and neighbor pressures him into doing things he knows he shouldn't. Mrs. R Hi there! I have been watching two television shows with my kids lately. My youngest loves it so much, that she begs to watch the newest episode every week! The first is Cosmos. Parents, you may remember it from when you were young. Here's a quote from the website www.zap2it.com: " "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey" is one of the most interesting, accessible and beautiful pieces of scientific television to appear in decades -- basically since the original "Cosmos" with Carl Sagan. Revived by host (and astronomer) Neil deGrasse Tyson, Seth MacFarlane (yes, the "Family Guy" guy) and Ann Druyan (Sagan's widow), the new "Cosmos" aims to bring the universe's beauty and wonder to audiences."
The next show, and my older child's favorite, is called "Brain Games" and is found on the National Geographic station. Here's what www.zap2it.com says about this show: "Building off last season’s success, which included setting a record as the highest-rated series launch in National Geographic Channel’s history and an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Informational Series or Special, the second season of Brain Games (@BrainGames) explores a new array of topics on how we see, process and think about the world around us — with episodes devoted to trust, competition, colors, stress and more." They air on the late side, so you can record them or find them on On Demand. Let me know what you think! Mrs. Romberg |
